Transponder Codes

When a transponder gets interrogated, it sends a signal encoded with an eight-digit code. The signal is referred to as the SQUAWK code and forms the basis for identifying aircraft on radar screens. It is also used to transmit a specific message to the air traffic control system in the event of an emergency or to notify controllers of changing weather conditions. Squawk codes are often utilized to communicate with ATC in situations where the pilot is unable to talk on the radio and are crucial for safe flying.

The last six digits of the VIN code are a unique serial number that uniquely identifies the car or truck. The last digit of the VIN code is also the check-digit. The remaining digits have been transliterated into numbers. For instance, the first digit gets an eight value; the next digits increase by one until it reaches nine at the seventh digit, and then transforms into two. Then the entire VIN will be reverted back to its original form, by multiplying each weight by 11. If the result is equal to the check number, then the VIN is valid.
